7 reasons why the 2017/18 Premier League season will get you excited

Published 9th Aug 2017
The new football Premier League season is almost upon us! As a matter of fact the 2017/18 season starts this Saturday Friday August 11. There has been a record summer spend in the League this summer of nearly £1 billion. Combined with players competing for places at the World Cup next summer, this campaign promises to be the most exciting yet. Here are seven reasons that will get you all excited for the new season.

1.   Diving bans

Players who dive next season will face punishment. The Football Association have introduced retrospective bans for players who dive or simulate injury. A panel will review footage from the weekend each Monday and any player found to have feigned injury or cheating will be punished. The FA could hand a two-match ban to those who are found guilty.

2.   Managerial rivalries

Last Premier League season we saw a flurry of new managers joining or returning to the League. This includes the likes of Pep Guardiola, Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho. We saw a lot of heated moments on the sidelines last year and the digs between the managers have already started. This season adds Rafael Benitez to the mix so expect plenty of must-see action in the dugout.

3.   Golden Boot race

There is some serious excitement surrounding the Golden Boot race this year. Tottenham’s Harry Kane has won the last two with ease. We predict he is only going to improve his ability in front of goal as he reaches his peak years. But Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have signed big-name strikers and we’re sure they will be fancying their chances of winning the Golden Boot.

Manchester United splashed out £80million for Romelu Lukaku, making him the second most expensive player and the most expensive striker in Premier League history. Chelsea have spent £70 million on Spanish hitman Alvaro Morata to replace the unwanted Diego Costa. Morata was a club record signing, just like Alexandre Lacazette, who Arsenal brought in from French side Lyon at a cost of £52.7m. Manchester City young talent Gabriel Jesus will be raring to go after some impressive performances at the end of the last Premier League season.

4.   Every team will play at Wembley

Tottenham Hotspur will play all their home matches at Wembley Stadium whilst White Hart Lane undergoes redevelopment. Playing at the iconic national stadium will feel like an honour to most of the ‘away’ sides that visit next season. The trip to Wembley will defiantly be the game most teams will be looking most forward to.

It will be interesting to see whether Mauricio Pochettino and his players can improve their Wembley performances from last year after their poor European campaign. They will play their first match there against champions Chelsea on 20 August.  It’ll be great to see 90,000 fans in the stands watching Premier League football.

5.   New penalty format

Penalty shoot-outs are changing. The new ‘ABBA’ penalty shoot-out format was used for Sunday’s Community Shield which Arsenal profited from by beating Chelsea. The new format is Team A goes first once, Team B goes twice, Team A goes twice and so on. Traditionally, English clubs have used the ‘ABAB’, with each team taking in in terms to strike a spot kick. The aim of this is to make the game fairer on the team taking the second penalty.

6.   Premier League debuts for Brighton and Huddersfield

Welcome to the big league! Brighton and Huddersfield are preparing their Premiership debuts as they secured their top flight status last season. How will they do? Well I’m sure they will be taking some tips and notes from Bournemouth. They won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2015 and have set an excellent example of how to adapt and settle in the league.

7.   No obvious winner for the Premier League title

It’s just getting tougher and tougher to make a call on who will lift the title, adding to the excitement over the battle for top spot this Premier League season. Millions have been spent so far – even teams like Everton have invested heavily over the summer. There could potentially be seven teams vying for the trophy. Maybe even a few dark horses, too.
