Plan a Fairy-Tale Day Out in a UK Castle

Castles are not only an awe inspiring part of our history, with their grandeur and splendour; they are a great way to enjoy our present. Exploring these beautiful pieces of architecture with a partner, family or friend is a fun way to fill a day or more quenching your thirst for history. It’s also a great way to bring learning alive on an educational trip. Here at SMC Coach Hire we love the magic of castles and the fairy tale world they transport us to which is why we have complied a list of the must visit castles in the UK.

Dover Castle

Dover Castle is arguably the most iconic English Fortress; built in the 11th century, it has earned the nickname “Key to England” thanks to its defensive significance. Losing yourself in the spectacular medieval interior is just one of many reasons to visit this fantastic place. You can also climb the Great Tower, meet with different characters who will share with you their tales, explore the medieval tunnels and World War One Fire Command Post and much more.

Beeston Castle

This Cheshire Castle dates back to the 1220’s when it was built by the 6th Earl of Chester, Ranulf, upon his return from the Crusades. Situated 350 feet above the Cheshire Plain on a rocky crag, it also offers breath-taking views, if you visit on a clear day you may be lucky enough to see all the way to the Welsh Mountains. With 40 acres of woodland park to explore and a rich history to delve into Beeston Castle is a must see for all the family.

Caerphilly Castle

This colossal castle was constructed in the 13th Century by Gilbert De Clare upon a mammoth 30 acres. When building it he certainly made history as today it remains the largest castle in Wales and the second largest in Britain, after Windsor. The Castle is well known for being a main attraction of the beautiful Caerphilly and recently it’s fame was heightened after being featured on the BBC TV series, Merlin. Walking the halls and grounds of this place is a great way to leave the modern world behind and lose yourself in the world of the medieval and its rich history. It often hosts a range of exhibitions, its latest including dragons! Young or old, you’re sure to enjoy a day at Caerphilly Castle.

Floors Castle

Home to the 10th Duke of Roxburghe and his family, Floors Castle is a fairy-tale come alive. Although not technically a fortress, but instead a grand country house it has made it onto the list due to its magnificent architecture, collections of art and tapestries and beautiful grounds. Located in the south-east of Scotland, Floors Castle has something for everyone with loads of things to see and do; spend the day enjoying a delicious lunch or afternoon tea, exploring the grounds and stunning gardens or taking in nature on a walking or cycling trail.

We love all of the castles above and everything they have to offer and there are many you can make a day of exploring.
