Vienna Christmas Markets.

Top European Winter Destinations

With the kids settled back in school and the bigger kids (if any) off at university thoughts always turn to winter holidays. We know exactly how you feel – and we’re here to help you!

With ferries and the Channel Tunnel available, coaches can take you door-to-hotel-door and back again anywhere in Europe, making for convenient travel arrangements and, because you’ll have the coach exclusively to share with friends and/or family, the holiday starts the moment the door closes and the driver pulls out onto the road.

And if you book one of the luxury or executive coaches we offer, the comfort and entertainment options during travel are greatly improved.

That being the case, we thought we’d take a look at some of the best places to go this wintertime…

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

The capital city of Denmark and home to Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid, Copenhagen is that rarity, a modern city which retains the fairy-tale atmosphere of the past, with cosy bars and cafes keeping you warm as you watch the snow flurries outside – and the Tivoli amusement park is at its best with the Christmas illuminations present. Don’t forget to try the local glögg!

3. Tignes, France

This ski resort is one of the most dependably snowy in France, and boasts great runs for beginner, intermediate, and expert skiers including a splendid off-piste experience. The nightlife and après ski opportunities are also amazing – so the typical crowd on any ski outing will all find something to suit them.

2. Granada, Spain

Grabbing some winter sun can revitalise you ahead of a typical cold, dreary English January, and the big tourist spots – like the Alhambra – don’t have the same crowds getting in the way that they do in the summer. It can be the best time of year to experience Spain as you have the nation’s beauty spots to yourselves.

If you want some more traditional winter activities, a trip to Sierra Nevada’s ski resort is easy to fit into a holiday in Granada.

1. Vienna, Austria

The German and Austrian tradition of the Christmas market is best demonstrated by Vienna’s celebration. The Rathausplatz and Rathauspark have to be seen to be believed, coming alive with amazing Christmas sights and sounds – and the beautiful aromas of roast chestnuts and Christmas punch will fill your nose in between trips on the Christkindl Express and visits to the Christmas Villages in Maria-Theresien-Platz and the old AKH – the former site of the city’s hospital and current Universite campus.

2016 will also see the debut of the Imperial and Royal Christmas Market, with high-quality goods on offer from producers who at one time had been suppliers to the Imperial and Royal Court. This makes a perfect place to pick up something unique – and some great Christmas gifts, too!
