Embassy and SMC Coach Hire working together to help homeless people in Manchester

Published 10th Nov 2023

About Embassy

It is a sad reality that homelessness in Manchester has been drastically on the rise over the last five years. According to statistics published by Shelter in January 2023, 1 in 74 people in Greater Manchester are currently experiencing homelessness.

Embassy, a Manchester based charity founded in 2019, is working hard to those affected by homelessness. What began as emergency accommodation aboard a repurposed tour bus has transformed into much-needed resettlement programme that goes the extra mile in helping the residents integrate back into society.

Embassy is currently partnered with over 20 Greater Manchester employers who employ their residents, which allows the charity to support them in saving up for a deposit and first month's rent for permanent accommodation. Residents are also provided with life-skills training and are given a variety of support to help them get back on their feet. The charities unique hands-on approach enables both male and female residents to manage a home, get a grip on finances and gain employment.

The stats

  • Supported over 175 people so far
  • 92% successfully housed and working
  • 3,500 hours of support each year
  • 15 bedrooms across 5 houses

Embassy Village

Embassy Village is the charity’s next project, and it will allow Embassy to make more of a substantial impact on homeless in Greater Manchester by providing people with a home in a purpose-built village.

Sandwiched between the River Irwell and the Bridgewater canal, the Village will provide 40 high quality homes, wraparound support, a real-life practice run at managing a home, getting a grip on finances and starting work. Residents will have access to community spaces in the village, perfect for socialising, eating, mentoring, training, sports and wellness, all of which may have been out of reach while living on the streets.

The village, which is set to be complete in 2024, will allow Embassy to make a positive impact on even more lives, and help address and overcome obstacles that many people encounter when trying to develop and gain a stable foothold in our community. Find more information, here.

SMC Coach Hire’s support of Embassy

SMC Coach Hire are deeply proud to a long-term supporter of Embassy, having been partnered with the charity since 2020. Inspired by the recent presentation Sid Willams, Embassy’s co-founder, held at our office, SMC staff are hosting a Christmas bake sale on 6th December to raise much needed funds to further support the tremendous work the charity do. The bake sale will take place at the entrance of Beehive Mill, Jersey St, Manchester, M4 6JG, so make sure to come down and show some support for this great cause. Find more information, here.
